Six Cameras, Two Doors, and Not Enough Power

Scott Cawthon’s Five Nights at Freddy’s confines the player to a single security office in Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and gives them a limited toolset: a bank of cameras covering the building, door controls on each side, and a power supply that depletes faster with every second the cameras are active and the doors are held shut. Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and the rarely-seen Golden Freddy move through the building in patterns that respond to how closely and how often they are observed. Survive until 6 AM on Night 5 and the threat escalates to Night 6, which the game treats as a bonus to its original design.

The Logic of Power Management

Every action in FNAF drains from a single shared power pool. Camera use costs a constant trickle; door lights cost slightly more; holding a door shut is the most expensive expenditure of all. The optimal strategy involves short, targeted camera checks to locate every animatronic, closing doors only when a threat is confirmed adjacent rather than merely approaching, and spending as much time as possible with all systems off — listening for audio cues that betray positions more cheaply than cameras do. Running out of power before 6 AM triggers a scripted sequence with Freddy that no amount of door-slamming can prevent, so power discipline is the game’s actual skill ceiling.

Five Animatronics, Five Different Nightmares

Each character in Freddy’s demands a slightly different countermeasure. Bonnie and Chica approach through left and right hallways respectively and are stopped by their respective doors; Foxy accelerates down the left corridor if he is not checked frequently enough in Pirate Cove, making regular camera checks there a mandatory part of the rotation. Freddy moves through cameras when unobserved and is hardest to predict; Golden Freddy appears only under specific rare conditions and terminates the night instantly. Learning each animatronic’s behaviour as a distinct system to manage, rather than reacting to all five as a single undifferentiated threat, is what makes five nights survivable.
