The World May Not Need a Vessel

Deltarune is a chapter-based RPG from Toby Fox — the creator of Undertale — that takes everything familiar about classic turn-based adventure games and gently, persistently unsettles it. You control Kris, a quiet teenager who falls into a mysterious Dark World alongside classmates Susie and Ralsei. The world is bright and strange and full of characters with real interiority. The battle system is clever: you fill an orb called the SOUL with power from all characters' actions, and choosing to pacify enemies rather than defeat them opens entirely different story threads.

Choice, Fate, and the Space Between

Deltarune is, among other things, a meditation on agency. It asks — sometimes directly, sometimes obliquely — whether player decisions truly shape a story or whether some destinies are simply fixed. This theme runs beneath everything: the dialogue, the mechanics, the music, and especially the moments when the game appears to look back at you. Toby Fox's writing is economical and precise; jokes land, dread accumulates, and the world feels lived-in in a way that takes genuine craft to achieve.

Two Chapters In, the Best May Be Ahead

Chapters 1 and 2 are available and free, with subsequent chapters in development. Even at this stage, Deltarune demonstrates the kind of ambition that makes following its progress compelling. Each chapter introduces distinct mechanics, tones, and antagonists — Chapter 2 in particular is an extended, confident piece of design that suggests the completed game will be something exceptional.
