Among Us was developed by Innersloth — a three-person studio — and released on June 15, 2018, but sat in near-obscurity for two years. In summer 2020, streamers on Twitch and YouTube picked it up and it exploded globally: by October 2020 it was being played by over 500 million people. The game draws direct inspiration from the social deduction party game Mafia (1986) and the 1982 film The Thing.
Crewmates must complete tasks scattered around the map while Impostors secretly sabotage and eliminate them. When a body is discovered, all players stop to discuss and vote on who to eject from the ship. The Crewmates win by completing all tasks or correctly ejecting all Impostors. Impostors win by reducing the crew to their own number or causing a catastrophic sabotage.
