The Story Behind 2048

Released on March 9, 2014, 2048 was built in a single weekend by then-19-year-old Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli — originally just a personal experiment to see if he could code a game from scratch. Within a week, the free and open-source project had attracted over 4 million visitors. Cirulli has always credited the conceptual inspiration to the iOS game Threes, and released 2048 under the MIT license because he felt uncomfortable profiting from a concept he didn't invent. Hundreds of clones followed, but the original remains the definitive version.

How to Play 2048

Use the arrow keys to slide all tiles on the 4×4 grid in one direction at a time. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile worth their combined value. A new tile — always a 2 or a 4 — appears after every move. The game ends when no more moves are possible. The goal is to create a tile numbered 2048, though skilled players continue past that to chase 4096, 8192, and beyond.

Winning Strategy

The most reliable approach is to pick one corner — typically bottom-right — and commit your highest-value tile there for the entire game. Build a descending chain of tiles outward from that corner and never move the highest tile away from it. Plan two or three moves ahead rather than reacting to the board, and resist the urge to merge tiles unless the merge supports your chain. Keeping one row or column consistently clear gives you the room to maneuver when new tiles appear in awkward positions.
